Fighting Breast Cancer

The following information is taken from the Susan G. Komen website. Link below:

Women

In 2013, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be [38]:
  • 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer (This includes new cases of primary breast cancer among survivors, but not recurrence of original breast cancer among survivors.)
  • 64,640 new cases of in situ breast cancer (This includes ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), of those, about 85 percent will be DCIS. DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer and LCIS is a condition that increases the risk of invasive breast cancer. Learn more about DCIS and LCIS.)
  • 39,620 breast cancer deaths
Men
Breast cancer in men is rare, but it does happen. In 2013, it is estimated that among men in the U.S. there will be [38]:

Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can be successfully treated. Screening tests can find cancer early, when chances for survival are highest.
1. Know your risk
  • Talk to both sides of your family to learn about your family health history
  • Talk to your provider about your personal risk of breast cancer
2. Get screened
  • Talk with your doctor about which screening tests are right for you if you are at ahigher risk
  • Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk
  • Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year starting at age 40
  • Sign up for your screening reminder at www.komen.org/reminder
3. Know what is normal for you
See your health care provider if you notice any of these breast changes:
  • Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area
  • Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
  • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
  • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
  • New pain in one spot that doesn't go away

National Bullying Prevention Month

Encouraging the kids in our classes to do the right thing is always part of the instruction. October is National Bullying Prevention Month and we are doing some things with our kids to raise awareness.

This Wednesday, October 9th is Unity Day - kids should wear orange to show their support against bullying. Parents - feel free to join your kids and wear orange too!

The fliers sent home asking the kids to wear orange have a place for kids to write why they are against bullying and we'll go over some of these in class.

We will also be having our kids sign "The End of Bullying Begins With Me" petition. Once all the signatures have been gathered, we will send this in to the Pacer organization and they will post first name only, age and city of everyone who signed.

Talk to your kids about bullying and what they can do to be part of the solution.

Consistency - The Most Important Part of Your Training

With our busy lives these days, it can be difficult to make time for ourselves. With a training program, consistency is important in order to achieve the results you want - so how do you find the time to fit it in? Our clients with the best results make their work out a priority. They have it scheduled into their day like an important meeting. They tell their trainer they'll be at class and if they can't make it due to unforeseen circumstances, they call or text their coach to let them know. Their work out is that important.

It's important to remember that getting "out of shape" didn't happen over night - although it often feels like it did. Getting back into shape isn't going to happen over night either.

The most important steps to achieving your fitness goals:
1. Schedule your workout into your day like an important meeting
2. Hold yourself accountable - if you have to miss class let your coach know. When you have to "call out" you're less likely to skip.
3. Show up
4. Give it your best every workout. That doesn't necessarily mean every workout is performed at the same intensity level. Sometimes we are tired or recovering from an illness and just can't hit that same intensity. The important thing is working to your absolute 100% ability every time.

So Give It 12 Weeks! and we'll see you at FOX Boot Camp tomorrow! Classes begin at 9am and 6:30pm
